Yesterday in the Nerd Verse… April 21st, 2015

So much news yesterday that we had to break it into sections…

Comic Books

In this week’s All-New X-Men, Brian Michael Bendis is changing things up a little bit, and is writing Bobby “Iceman” Drake to come out of the closet. Surprise! This news is making waves all over the industry. It’s a brave move and could help tens of thousands of people gain the courage to come out. Source: Marvel

Cyborg will be getting his own series in July! An interview with writer David Walker gave better insight to what we can expect from the solo series. Source: CBR

Prequel comic books to Bruce Timm’s Justice League: Gods and Monsters also come out in July.

Marvel is starting over (or continuing, I can never quite tell at this point) a bunch of their old famous arcs, including: Civil WarOld Man LoganPlanet HulkSpider Island, and Age of Apocalypse.

The Star Trek/Green Lantern crossover mini-series comes out in July.

Saga writer Brian K Vaughan is creating a new Image Comics book, We Stand on Guard, a futuristic war story about a group of Canadians who are defending their homeland from… the USA. There will also be robots.

Also from Image will be crime drama series Wolf, featuring the colorist from Deadly Class, Lee Loughridge. It’s described as part-True Detective, part-Sandman. I’m all parts excited.

Image is diving into the pulpy superhero genre with Rob Liefeld’s (creator of Deadpool) Broodstrike. I think this is just what Image has been missing.

Sex Criminals is returning in July with issue #12! Huzzah! They are also releasing a single-print XXX version of this issue. Very likely a joke… but highly collectible!

The Walking Dead has become so mysterious that they stopped revealing any description about the issue to come. With nothing else to go off of, we can only assume the character on the cover of issue #140 is Jesse Pinkman. Fingers crossed! SourceTWD

Movies

Kevin Feige (director of Ant-Man) divulged that Marvel movies have a habit of honoring Star Wars by cutting off hands in their films. This may be the most subtle way to say “I love you,” and the evidence is definitely there. Well played, Disney. Source: CinemaBlend

Straight from the Man of Steel’s mouth, Henry Cavill says that the upcoming Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice will not be a sequel to Man of Steel. Judging from the trailer, it looks to be something much different – more like “Batman featuring Superman.” The movie will likely be a platform for the introduction of the Justice League than a spotlight on Superman. Source: MTV

In other BvS news, Los Angeles Clippers’ center DeAndre Jordan got an in-depth tour of Warner Bros. Studios, which included hands-on experience with the Batmobile. If 6’11” Jordan looks that comfortable in it, imagine how spacious it must be for 6’4″ Ben Affleck. There’s also a closer look at the costumes for Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman. Source: Bleacher Report

The movie series of Sony’s Valiant Comics adaptations will be Harbinger and Bloodshot, starting with Harbinger in 2017. Are they too late to the party, or are there enough people who still want the kind of independent comic book films that Valiant can provide? Source: THR

More casting news about the live-action Beauty and the Beast was announced. Stanley Tucci will play Cadenza, the grand piano (via Variety), Ewan McGregor will play Lumiere (via THR), and Beyond the Light‘s Gugu Mbatha-Raw will be playing the feather duster, Plumette (via Variety). This rounds out a cast that includes Emma Watson as Belle and Dan Stevens as Beast, as well as Luke Evans (Gaston), Josh Gadd (LeFou), Ian McKellen (Cogsworth). With this much star-power, it’s bound to be amazing.

Trailers

A new trailer for the upcoming Jurassic World dropped. It’s going to be awesome. Here we get an in-depth look at Chris Pratt, the Velociraptor whisperer, and the genetically-modified dinosaurs that will be taking center stage in the movie. Now that we have a better idea of what’s to come, it looks almost like Deep Blue Sea with dinosaurs. And no Sam Jackson. Source: YouTube

Tomorrowland is closer than we think! Another trailer for the film, which drops in a month, was released. We finally get a better look at what the film is actually about in this one. Source: YouTube

Television

Kind of a “no duh” here, but the Netflix Marvel’s Daredevil series has been renewed for another season. Show-runners for Season 2 will be the returning Drew Goddard, Marco Ramirez, and Jeph Loeb – as well as new face Doug Petrie, who has worked on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and American Horror Story. Due to prior commitments, Steven DeKnight will not be rejoining the team. Source: Marvel

After testing the waters with a comic book mini-series, Galaxy Quest is diving right in with the development of a television series. The story has been picked up by Paramount Studios, whatever story that may be.  SourceVariety

The Full House Netflix adaptation is a go! John Stamos (Uncle Jesse) officially announced the 13-episode series called Fuller House, which will be about a newly-widowed and pregnant DJ. Stephanie and Kimmy move in. Comedy ensues. This won’t be for everyone; it looks like a much darker and adult-oriented series. I mean, Comet is dead, you guys. However, if we can get some solid laugh tracks in there, all is forgiven. Source: The Verge

Looks like that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. spinoff is going to star Bobbi Morse (Mockingbird) and Lance Hunter. This happy couple could lead to a very Mr. and Mrs. Smith vibe, or possibly mean that they will team up to find other metahumans Inhumans, which would be a great way to explore lesser-known characters, like Ms. Marvel! Hot Topic is coming out with some really cute dresses in celebration of Avengers 2: Age of Ultron. You can pre-order them here. They are going to be released on May 12th.

Yesterday in the Nerd Verse… Mar 9th, 2015

We don’t know much about Sam Raimi’s new Ash Vs. Evil Dead series, but at least the producers have been keeping anxious fans happy with cast announcements. Monday Starz announced that the one and only Lucy Lawless will be joining the cast as a pivotal character named Ruby. Lawless has worked with Raimi before and just in case you didn’t know he was responsible for Xena: Warrior Princess and therefore deserves even more of your gratitude. Ash vs. Evil Dead is set to begin filming in New Zealand in the spring. Source: Geek Tyrant

Sony loves money, and therefore they will be launching basically all things Ghostbusters. Let me clarify, after the all-female cast Ghostbusters movie starring Kristin Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon there will now also be an all-male Ghostbusters movie, starring Channing Tatum and TBA. The movie will be directed by the Russo Brothers (Captain America: Winter Soldier) and will be written by Drew Pearce (Iron Man 3). Dan Aykroyd and Ivan Reitman are in on this, and we can expect Ghostbusters related movies, TV shows and much, much more from here on out. Source: Deadline

AMC means business when it comes to their spinoff series’. The Walking Dead spinoff, or Fear the Walking Dead (rumored title) has already been picked up for two seasons despite the fact that it is not even set to air until late summer 2015. The first season will consist of 6 episodes and will take place in Los Angeles. If you ever wondered what the hell happened while Rick was in a coma then you’ll want to watch this one because it is supposed to tell the story of how the zombie outbreak happened. I just hope they change the title before it airs. Source: Deadline

Final Fantasy is adding violence into their beautiful mix and Square Enix released a trailer for Final Fantasy: Type-0 that looks breathtaking and brutal. It seems we can expect a lot more gore than ever before when the game comes out on March 17, 2015. You can watch the trailer here:

Apple and HBO have decided to join forces and announced Monday that they will be releasing HBO Apple TV Streaming that will allow subscribers to watch HBO programs whenever they want. The service will be available in time for the April 12 premiere of season 5 of Game of Thrones. In other news… this trailer for season 5 of Game of Thrones!!! Just happen already!! Source: Twitter

Disney released a full trailer for Tomorrowland on Monday and I have to say, I hate Disney but this movie looks pretty damn amazing. You can check it out here:

It was announced Monday that comedic genius and brilliant philanthropist Sam Simon passed away at age 59 after his battle with colon cancer. Simon was the co-creator of The Simpsons and a 9 time Emmy Award winner. Simon was well known for his philanthropic efforts and became a sensation when he vowed to give away his vast fortune to charity when he passed, he also started the Sam Simon Foundation in Malibu, CA which rescues hungry and stray dogs. He was a lover of people and animals and will be greatly missed. Source: THR

Fox Studios has announced some of their summer show premiere dates and most of the spring and fall lineup finale dates. Honestly the only thing I care about in all of this is the global premiere of M. Night Shyamalan’s Wayward Pines which will debut May 14, 2015. The series has been described as an X-Files meets Twin Peaks hybrid, and as those are two of my favorite things ever I can’t wait, even though Shyamalan has let me down on more than one occasion. Gotham’s season will come to a close on May 4 but as we all know it will be back for a second season WITHOUT Jada Pinkett Smith, so at least we’ve got that going for us. Source: Variety

In other I Freaking Hate Disney News, an announcement came via James Gunn’s Facebook Q&A that Marvel Studios will not be attending Comic Con this year. WHAT?!?! Marvel is one of the few big and exciting things actually comic related that fans look forward to every year, but now that they’re owned by Disney (those ass clowns) they are seemingly no longer using SDCC as a launching pad for new project announcements. Instead they’ll hold events at the El Capitan Theatre and appear at the D23 Expo. I’d just like to say on behalf of geeks everywhere, BOO! Source: Facebook

I don’t know why I even keep reporting on this because it’s really anti-news, but if you heard the rumors that Sam Strike (whoever the hell that is) was cast as the new Spider-Man you can go ahead and disregard them. Sony is still casting the role and they are looking at teenagers because they want a 15 year old Peter Parker. Sam Strike made some tweets about having to work out for an exciting new role, but that will more likely be in the Deadpool movie or X-Men: Apocalypse. Source: Instagram

The Suicide Squad movie train keeps rolling forward and a real and actual Rick Flagg has been announced. Joel Kinnaman (RoboCop) revealed during interviews on Monday that he was cast as Flagg, after Tom Hardy dropped out and the rumors of Jake Gyllenhaal turned into nothing. Source: The Wrap
