Recommendations:

Before I start, this is my response to all the Convergence titles last week:

Converengce: The Question #1

Convergence: More character-specific Convergence issues hit the stands this week. Most of the ones last week were a bust but I have hope for this week. Particularly interesting are: the return of Henry Irons and Gen13, an Azrael-Batman face-off, Kingdom Come Batman, and hook-armed Aquaman.

RunLoveKill #1: There isn’t a whole lot out there on this new Image Comics title, but all you need to see is one panel and you’ll be hooked. It’s a futuristic tale about a fugitive assassin on the run. I’m sure there’s a real story in there, but all I really want to see is more of that graffiti-like art.

Ms. Marvel #17: It’s been a while since I’ve harped about this book, but it’s time for you to pick up Ms. Marvel, one of the most down-to-earth that is out now – and that’s a big deal since the whole industry is blowing up everything. G Willow Wilson writes a well-balanced book that educates and well as entertains.

This Week’s Comics – April 8th, 2015

Recommendations:

Convergence: So it begins… If you didn’t catch last week’s Convergence #0, you’re probably okay. It made zero sense to me. With all the complex concepts in Multiversity, I hope DC keeps it simple with the character-specific ones, which this week include: Stephanie Brown’s Batgirl, Damian and Red Hood’s clash, and a romantic Dick Grayson and Barbara Gordon. I can definitely get behind some of these retcons.

Deadpool #45: It’s been advertised for months, but in this 250th issue of Deadpool, he is going to die. They’re gonna blow the whole universe up, so why not kill off the unkill-able Wade Wilson? I just hope he goes out in a blaze of glory, not the emotional half-assed send-off that Wolverine got. Either way, it’s unfortunate because Deadpool has been one of the most consistently-enjoyable books in Marvel’s gamut. It’s not the best book, but it’s always worth a read. He’s still in pop culture, so he won’t be gone for long.

Savior #1: The man, the myth, the legend Todd McFarlane put his hands on this project, contributing to his first non-Spawn comic book in over 20 years. Savior takes the Messiah Complex and turns it on its head, asking, “what would really happen if the world found a man with biblical powers?” Would he be feared, ostracized or loved? I love the concept, and as Image continues to be a breeding ground for insane stories, this looks like another keeper.

This Week’s Comics – April 1st, 2015

Recommendations:

Convergence #0: Let the money-making machine start bulldozing all the notions of continuity you hold dear. The next stage in comic book evolution starts here, or whatever. This particular jump-start issue surrounds Superman and Brainiac. It’s said to reference several of my favorite Superman personalities (Kingdom Come, Red Son). You’ll probably hate it, but if you want to know what the hell is going on in DC for the next few months, then this will be worth picking up.

Kanan: The Last Padawan #1: If you are into the new Star Wars Rebels series, then you have to get this, hands-down. If you are the Jon Snow of Star Wars, then you still might get some enjoyment out of this. It’s the origin story of the new SWR space cowboy, Kanan. He’s a never-before-seen character and a lot of fans are anticipating a more fleshed-out origin than is given in the show.

Nailbiter #11: I won’t fault you for not reading Nailbiter, but your pass is just about over. This book has gotten increasingly better, and it’s all thanks to a Hannibal-like pro/antagonist named Nailbiter. The town of Buckaroo is home to over a dozen serial killers, and we don’t know if it’s a conspiracy or a supernatural thing – and that element of uncertainty makes the book that much spookier. Nearly half our writers here at Hush are addicted to the book, and if you gave it a try, you might be, too.

This Week’s Comics – March 25th, 2015

Recommendations:

Suiciders #2: After I gave the first issue Pick of the Week, you know I had to recommend the second. The dystopian cybernetic Fight Club, or Suiciders for short, asked more questions than it answered, but left enough of an impression that I want to come back for more. This is all besides the fact that Lee Bermejo is an extremely talented creator .

Powers #2: Another Pick of the Week come back for its second installment, and another legendary creator telling the story. Brian Michael Bendis’ Powers has actually been around for 15 years now, but is getting a revisit due to the timing of the live-action Playstation series. I’m a first-time Powers reader, and there is a bunch of prerequisite knowledge, but the humorous writing and intriguing story keep me engaged.

Batman and Robin #40: Whether or not you like that Damian Wayne is back from the dead – with superpowers – you have to admit that this story arc is fascinating. Exhibiting his new-found powers, he was bound to throw in with the grown-ups eventually. Now one of the only two original New52 tag teams left on their book (the other being Snyder/Capullo on Batman) are going to explore the sass of Damian with the heavy hitter Justice League. I like.

The Walking Dead #139: All I needed to see in order to freak out about this was a ship on the front cover. Where the hell did they find a ship? Who the hell is commandeering the ship? It’s all ambiguous, but I would love to see another faction come into play here.

This Week’s Comics – March 18th, 2015

Recommendations:

Superman #39: This will be the last issue of the new Superman run written by Geoff Johns. After that, both writing and drawing duties will be held by John Romita Jr. Ulysses is taken care of, for now, but with the way the last issue ended – with a bombshell – I’m not so sure how things will play out in this last Johns-written issue.

Chrononauts #1: When it comes to new age sci-fi comic books, there are three kings: Rick Remender, Jeff Lemire, and Mark Millar. Chrononauts joins Millarverse as the story of two great friends who unlock the secret of time travel. If the science doesn’t get you, then either the stellar art (Punk Rock Jesus‘ Sean Murphy) or the sure-to-make-you-laugh dialogue from Mark Millar will.

Invisible Republic #1: Seriously, any book that’s described by its publisher as “Breaking Bad meets Blade Runner” is going to have an automatic endorsement from me. This sci-fi series about a reporter who uncovers the journal of a legendary freedom fighter, and the barbaric truth about the leader. If you’re like me, and you didn’t hear anything past “Breaking Bad,” then you have passed the test.

Strange Sports Stories #1: In all likelihood, this is going to a really weird series. There’s a real retro feel here, one that harkens back to a time when comic books were not synonymous with superheroes. The variety creative cost that is contributing to this Vertigo book is impressive, and with various short stories to choose from, you’re sure to find one book that will interest you.

This Week’s Comics – March 11th, 2015

Recommendations:

Postal #2: If creepy is your schtick, then Postal is your book. Mark has Aspergers. He lives in Eden, Wyoming with his mother, who is also the mayor. It’s a seedy town, full of second-chancers. However, when someone is murdered in the garden of Eden (kidding, it was actually in the middle of the street), the town is less than thrilled. I, however, wet myself in anxiety.

Howard the Duck #1: Judging by the cult explosion at the after-credit scene in Guardians of the Galaxy, I think people were more excited at his cameo than the movie. Written by Chip Zdarsky, this books is gonna be funnier than any book about an anthropomorphic duck you thought would be. I’m glad Howard can finally poke his head in pride after hiding in shame for the last nearly 30 years.

Batman: Arkham Knight #1: With the final game looming overhead, this prequel series should fill in the gaps of what Gotham is like with a dead Joker. Arkham City has been closed down and Batman is physically wearing down. Usually video-game prequel books are crap quality, but the past Arkham books present a unique perspective.

This Week’s Comics – March 4th, 2015

Recommendations:

Neverboy #1: Dark Horse’s newest sensation is about a former imaginary friend who must stay medicated to maintain his presence in the real world. Written by Shaun Simon (Killjoys) and pencilled by Tyler Jenkins (Peter Panzerfaust), this looks to be just as trippy as will be insane. It harkens the same vibe as BOOM! Studios’ Polarity, and that’s a great thing.

Saga #26: Shit got real. For serious. With all that’s going on in Saga, it almost feels that the series is moving too fast – into a direction that sounds really scary and uncertain. Nonetheless, I am still aching every month for a new installment of this fantasy series. Each character brings something special to the book, and form a rainbow of happiness across each page.

Descender #1: It’s not too often that comic book juggernauts get together on a totally independent project (since, like, Saga), but when the stars align, it’s something to behold. Jeff Lemire (Trillium, Sweet Tooth, The Underwater Welder) and Dustin Nguyen (Batman: Streets of Gotham, Detective Comics, Lil’ Gotham) team up for another sci-fi odyssey, following a young robot’s story of survival in a world where androids have been deemed illegal.
