This Week’s Comics – September 2nd, 2015

This Week’s Comics is the pull list of Comic Books recommended by Hush Comics, with notes and suggestions by co-owner, Sherif Elkhatib.

Recommendations:

Plutona #1: A new Jeff Lemire book? Yes, that’s all you need to know.

Miracleman by Gaiman and Buckingham #1: This character has had a good resurgence as of late, but getting Sandman creator Neil Gaiman back in the game is worth the price of admission alone here.

Deadpool vs. Thanos #1: Deadpool has versused everybody in the Marvel U, but can he stand up to Thanos? Probably not, but I bet he can annoy the shit out of him.

This Week’s Comics – August 26th, 2015

This Week’s Comics is the pull list of Comic Books recommended by Hush Comics, with notes and suggestions by co-owner, Sherif Elkhatib.

Recommendations:

Drive #1: It looks like IDW’s licensing isn’t limited to just 80’s cartoons. Ryan Gosling’s 2011 pulp film is also getting a comic book adaptation. I’m not sure how well this will translate, but I’m interested enough to give it a try.

Prez #3: I’m not sure why nobody else is reading this. The political commentary is spot-on, to the point where I’m not sure writer Joe Simon shouldn’t run for office. By the way, the writer of Prez is THE Joe Simon – the creator of Captain America.

Deadpool’s Secret Secret Wars #4: This mini-series has been fun, and I’m a little sad to see it end. However, the overall significance of this ending is much greater. It means that this super-saturated bullshit Secret Wars saga is almost over. I’m ready for something “All-New All-Different” because I don’t know how many more sub-par retcons of retcons I can take.

This Week’s Comics – August 19th, 2015

This Week’s Comics is the pull list of Comic Books recommended by Hush Comics, with notes and suggestions by co-owner, Sherif Elkhatib.

Recommendations:

Justice League #43: So, Batman is a New God now. Shouldn’t that be reason enough to tune into The Darkseid Wars? At first I thought this story was gonna be too far out in left field for me to care about, but Geoff Johns has done an excellent job at keeping the series grounded.

House of M #1: No More Mutants… But reboots about having no more mutants? That’s perfectly fine. One of my favorite Marvel stories of al time comes back, this time with House Magnus ruling all. It could be horrible (like Marvel Zombies) or it could be refreshingly great (like E for X-Tinction), or it could be somewhere in the middle (like Civil War).

Squirrel Girl Volume 1: Squirrel Power: I usually don’t recommend stuff from the trade section, but I feel like too many people missed out on what is a wonderful comic book. Doreen Green is just a normal kid trying to balance being a closeted squirrel with her studies at school. It’s witty, adorable, and full of guest appearances.

This Week’s Comics – August 12th, 2015

This Week’s Comics is the pull list of Comic Books recommended by Hush Comics, with notes and suggestions by co-owner, Sherif Elkhatib.

Recommendations:

DC Comics Bombshells #1: DC Collectibles’ signature line of statues makes its debut as an digital-first weekly series. The story looks to fit the vintage art style. I’m sure it will be a bit more “cutesy” than anything else, so don’t pick it up with the intention of reading something revolutionary.

X-Files: Season 11 #1: The X-Files comic book returns after a couple month hiatus. Our writer Jacob really loves this series and cites it as being a solid continuation to the TV show. This season starts with Mulder being a fugitive on the run.

The Walking Dead #145: In the last issue of TWD, things got really real. The leader of the Whisperers, Alpha, has just crossed the line with Rick Grimes, and judging by the cover, I’d say Rick is not going to take this lying down. Good. Rick has turned into quite the tranquil character since the time jump. Negan’s gotta play into this, somehow.

This Week’s Comics – August 5th, 2015

This Week’s Comics is the pull list of Comic Books recommended by Hush Comics, with notes and suggestions by co-owner, Sherif Elkhatib.

Recommendations:

Dark Corridor #1: A town ruled by the mob starts seeing its leaders murdered one by one, hunted down by unknown female assassins. At first glance, it sounds like Sin City‘s Old Town. All creative duties are being handled by Rich Tommaso (8-1/2 Ghosts), and it’s toted as being Goodfellas with a Tarantino twist.

Red Sonja/Conan #1: This team-up incites some real 80’s nostalgia! The Barbarian and She-Devil are together again for the first time since …Conan/Red Sonja earlier this year. I’m usually weary of Dynamite’s franchised books, but the art looks well-done and this is a crossover that actually makes sense.

Giant-Sized Little Marvel: AvX #3: This cute as hell story has been tugging at my heartstrings for months. It can come across a bit formulaic at times, but there is so much cute packed into each issue that I don’t care. There are clever self-aware comments, gigantic detailed fight scenes and, above all, adorably-rendered versions of your favorite Marvel characters.

This Week’s Comics – July 22nd, 2015

This Week’s Comics is the pull list of Comic Books recommended by Hush Comics, with notes and suggestions by co-owner, Sherif Elkhatib.

Recommendations:

Cyborg #1: Since the New52 relaunch, Cyborg has been, for lack of a better word, upgraded. He’s a member of the Justice League now, joining the big kids table. Now, he’s graduated to a new suit, that looks somewhere between his original Teen Titan suit and Frieza from Dragon Ball Z. The story follows his journey through android puberty, where he’s going through changes his body can’t understand. Oh, teenagers.

Star-Lord and Kitty Pryde #1: Let the awkward relationship begin! Peter Quill and Kitty are starting their very own Battleworld adventures together. Their displacement into the new world seems to be far from the space adventures Star-Lord and the X-Men led in the Black Vortex storyline, which I think makes the book more interesting. Let’s see these two lovebirds in action together!

Wolf #1: We’ve all read werewolf books before, so what sets Wolf apart? The six-part miniseries by Cullen Bunn (who also wrote Vertigo’s Wolf Moon – not a promising start…) is pencilled by Jeremy Haun (Berserker) and colored by Deadly Class‘ Lee Loughridge. Okay, so the real selling point here is Loughridge. However, if Bunn can learn from what made Wolf Moon ending up sucking, then Wolf can be a fun series.

This Week’s Comics is the pull list of Comic Books recommended by Hush Comics, with notes and suggestions by co-owner, Sherif Elkhatib.

Recommendations:

Dr. Fate #2: This book was amazing. There’s great art and a solid story – not to mention lots of Egyptian mythology. I’m ready for this second issue!

Godzilla in Hell #1: Pretty much, why the hell not?

Hawkeye #22: This is the Kumbaya, the swan song, the grand finale to Matt Fraction and David Aja’s Hawkeye run. It’s been an amazing run, and the last issue leads to an epic showdown between Hawkeyes and the Bros. It’s on, motherf*cker!

Siege #1: I would normally skip out on this title, but since Kieron Gillen’s name is attached to it, I will bite. The premise I got from this is that The Shield is where all the nasty things go (Zombies, Murderbots, etc) to try to break in to normal society. I got my fingers crossed for pure carnage.

Archie #1: Disclaimer here: I’ve never read an Archie book. There’s a reason the series has lasted over 75 years, right? This reboot is big news, and not just because it’s a chance to start anew with one of the oldest (and still most relevant) characters not donning a cape. The creative team taking over for the new series is writer Mark Waid (Daredevil) and artist Fiona Staples (Saga). If that doesn’t excite you, then you may be a lost cause.

Invader Zim #1: Holy 90’s nostalgia factor, you guys! The Doom Song plays on repeat in my head as I do a little Gir gig around the house. Dib has forgone all hygiene to track Zim back down, and his sacrifice has been duly noted. Unlike all the other 90’s cartoons, which have flooded IDW’s catalog in the past couple years, Zim has found a home with ONI Press.

Star Trek/Green Lantern #1: So many months have passed from when this series was first announced that I forgot it was even coming out this soon. Crossovers, especially IDW crossovers, can be exceptionally crappy. However, if there are any two franchises that can blend together and pull it off, it’s these two intergalactic franchises. I’m especially curious to see how Captain Kirk and Hal Jordan get along since they are built off the same archetype (it looks like we’re getting movie reboot Star Trek).

1872 #1: If you loved the original 1602 like me, then you’re gonna lovin the most rootinest, tootinest time displacement storyline from Marvel – 1872. Sheriff Steve Rogers and Anthony Stark (drunkard Anthony Stark) rule over the town of Timely. This could very well suck, but it won’t matter. If we get some good art and Wild West style actions, it will be worth it.

We Stand on Guard #1: All you really need to know is that this is a new Brian K. Vaughan book. He writes a little book called Saga. If you must know more, it’s about a hypothetical situation where Canada is invaded by the United States of America. The promotional material also totes “badass freedom fighters” and “giant f*cking robots.” Sign me up.

Will Eisner’s The Spirit #1: With all this Joker hoopla going on, it’s easy to forget that he’s not the only one with a milestone anniversary this year. After 75 years and a decent 2008 Frank Miller-directed movie, The Spirit is making a comeback in the form of a 12-issue run with Matt Wagner (GrendelMage) writing and Dan Schkade (San Hannibal) on art.

Detective Comics #42: Not a lot of people are on board with Jim Gordon being the new Batman, but the Detective Comics series is following a more Gotham Central type of storyline. Taking more time to focus on the actual police department was a refreshing take on the city, and seeing how Gordon already has a rebellious side, it’ll be interesting to see how both sides handle the situation.
