So much news yesterday that we had to break it into sections…
Comic Books
In this week’s All-New X-Men, Brian Michael Bendis is changing things up a little bit, and is writing Bobby “Iceman” Drake to come out of the closet. Surprise! This news is making waves all over the industry. It’s a brave move and could help tens of thousands of people gain the courage to come out. Source: Marvel
Cyborg will be getting his own series in July! An interview with writer David Walker gave better insight to what we can expect from the solo series. Source: CBR
Prequel comic books to Bruce Timm’s Justice League: Gods and Monsters also come out in July.
Marvel is starting over (or continuing, I can never quite tell at this point) a bunch of their old famous arcs, including: Civil War, Old Man Logan, Planet Hulk, Spider Island, and Age of Apocalypse.
The Star Trek/Green Lantern crossover mini-series comes out in July.
Saga writer Brian K Vaughan is creating a new Image Comics book, We Stand on Guard, a futuristic war story about a group of Canadians who are defending their homeland from… the USA. There will also be robots.
Also from Image will be crime drama series Wolf, featuring the colorist from Deadly Class, Lee Loughridge. It’s described as part-True Detective, part-Sandman. I’m all parts excited.
Image is diving into the pulpy superhero genre with Rob Liefeld’s (creator of Deadpool) Broodstrike. I think this is just what Image has been missing.
Sex Criminals is returning in July with issue #12! Huzzah! They are also releasing a single-print XXX version of this issue. Very likely a joke… but highly collectible!
The Walking Dead has become so mysterious that they stopped revealing any description about the issue to come. With nothing else to go off of, we can only assume the character on the cover of issue #140 is Jesse Pinkman. Fingers crossed! Source: TWD
Movies
Kevin Feige (director of Ant-Man) divulged that Marvel movies have a habit of honoring Star Wars by cutting off hands in their films. This may be the most subtle way to say “I love you,” and the evidence is definitely there. Well played, Disney. Source: CinemaBlend
Straight from the Man of Steel’s mouth, Henry Cavill says that the upcoming Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice will not be a sequel to Man of Steel. Judging from the trailer, it looks to be something much different – more like “Batman featuring Superman.” The movie will likely be a platform for the introduction of the Justice League than a spotlight on Superman. In other BvS news, Los Angeles Clippers’ center DeAndre Jordan got an in-depth tour of Warner Bros. Studios, which included hands-on experience with the Batmobile. If 6’11” Jordan looks that comfortable in it, imagine how spacious it must be for 6’4″ Ben Affleck. There’s also a closer look at the costumes for Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman. The movie series of Sony’s Valiant Comics adaptations will be Harbinger and Bloodshot, starting with Harbinger in 2017. Are they too late to the party, or are there enough people who still want the kind of independent comic book films that Valiant can provide? Source: THR
More casting news about the live-action Beauty and the Beast was announced. Stanley Tucci will play Cadenza, the grand piano (via Variety), Ewan McGregor will play Lumiere (via THR), and Beyond the Light‘s Gugu Mbatha-Raw will be playing the feather duster, Plumette (via Variety). This rounds out a cast that includes Emma Watson as Belle and Dan Stevens as Beast, as well as Luke Evans (Gaston), Josh Gadd (LeFou), Ian McKellen (Cogsworth). With this much star-power, it’s bound to be amazing.
Trailers
A new trailer for the upcoming Jurassic World dropped. It’s going to be awesome. Here we get an in-depth look at Chris Pratt, the Velociraptor whisperer, and the genetically-modified dinosaurs that will be taking center stage in the movie. Now that we have a better idea of what’s to come, it looks almost like Deep Blue Sea with dinosaurs. And no Sam Jackson. Source: YouTube
Tomorrowland is closer than we think! Another trailer for the film, which drops in a month, was released. We finally get a better look at what the film is actually about in this one. Source: YouTube
Television
Kind of a “no duh” here, but the Netflix Marvel’s Daredevil series has been renewed for another season. Show-runners for Season 2 will be the returning Drew Goddard, Marco Ramirez, and Jeph Loeb – as well as new face Doug Petrie, who has worked on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and American Horror Story. Due to prior commitments, Steven DeKnight will not be rejoining the team. Source: Marvel
After testing the waters with a comic book mini-series, Galaxy Quest is diving right in with the development of a television series. The story has been picked up by Paramount Studios, whatever story that may be. Source: Variety
The Full House Netflix adaptation is a go! John Stamos (Uncle Jesse) officially announced the 13-episode series called Fuller House, which will be about a newly-widowed and pregnant DJ. Stephanie and Kimmy move in. Comedy ensues. This won’t be for everyone; it looks like a much darker and adult-oriented series. I mean, Comet is dead, you guys. However, if we can get some solid laugh tracks in there, all is forgiven. Source: The Verge
Looks like that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. spinoff is going to star Bobbi Morse (Mockingbird) and Lance Hunter. This happy couple could lead to a very Mr. and Mrs. Smith vibe, or possibly mean that they will team up to find other metahumans Inhumans, which would be a great way to explore lesser-known characters, like Ms. Marvel!
