This Week’s Comics – April 8th, 2015

This Week’s Comics is the pull list of Comic Books recommended by Hush Comics, with notes and suggestions by co-owner, Sherif Elkhatib.

Recommendations:

Convergence: So it begins… If you didn’t catch last week’s Convergence #0, you’re probably okay. It made zero sense to me. With all the complex concepts in Multiversity, I hope DC keeps it simple with the character-specific ones, which this week include: Stephanie Brown’s Batgirl, Damian and Red Hood’s clash, and a romantic Dick Grayson and Barbara Gordon. I can definitely get behind some of these retcons.

Deadpool #45: It’s been advertised for months, but in this 250th issue of Deadpool, he is going to die. They’re gonna blow the whole universe up, so why not kill off the unkill-able Wade Wilson? I just hope he goes out in a blaze of glory, not the emotional half-assed send-off that Wolverine got. Either way, it’s unfortunate because Deadpool has been one of the most consistently-enjoyable books in Marvel’s gamut. It’s not the best book, but it’s always worth a read. He’s still in pop culture, so he won’t be gone for long.

Savior #1: The man, the myth, the legend Todd McFarlane put his hands on this project, contributing to his first non-Spawn comic book in over 20 years. Savior takes the Messiah Complex and turns it on its head, asking, “what would really happen if the world found a man with biblical powers?” Would he be feared, ostracized or loved? I love the concept, and as Image continues to be a breeding ground for insane stories, this looks like another keeper.

This Week’s Comics – April 1st, 2015

This Week’s Comics is the pull list of Comic Books recommended by Hush Comics, with notes and suggestions by co-owner, Sherif Elkhatib.

Recommendations:

Convergence #0: Let the money-making machine start bulldozing all the notions of continuity you hold dear. The next stage in comic book evolution starts here, or whatever. This particular jump-start issue surrounds Superman and Brainiac. It’s said to reference several of my favorite Superman personalities (Kingdom ComeRed Son). You’ll probably hate it, but if you want to know what the hell is going on in DC for the next few months, then this will be worth picking up.

Kanan: The Last Padawan #1: If you are into the new Star Wars Rebels series, then you have to get this, hands-down. If you are the Jon Snow of Star Wars, then you still might get some enjoyment out of this. It’s the origin story of the new SWR space cowboy, Kanan. He’s a never-before-seen character and a lot of fans are anticipating a more fleshed-out origin than is given in the show.

Nailbiter #11: I won’t fault you for not reading Nailbiter, but your pass is just about over. This book has gotten increasingly better, and it’s all thanks to a Hannibal-like pro/antagonist named Nailbiter. The town of Buckaroo is home to over a dozen serial killers, and we don’t know if it’s a conspiracy or a supernatural thing – and that element of uncertainty makes the book that much spookier. Nearly half our writers here at Hush are addicted to the book, and if you gave it a try, you might be, too.

The Geekly Forecast: Mar 30th – Apr 5th, 2015

The Geekly Forecast is a weekly preview of all the neat stuff coming to screens, stores, and living rooms near you!

Recommendations:
TV:  Arrow and Flash are still strong choices for TV, now that shows are starting to drop off like flies. I’m particularly interested in how The Flash ends up. That Harrison Wells guy is a tricky bastard.
Music: It took him forever and a day to release it, but Ludacris is finally releasing his 9th studio album, Ludaversal. It might not shine like his old stuff did, but there is plenty of star power on this record.
Netflix: I’ve never gotten a chance to see Underworld before, so streaming it on Netflix sounds like a grand idea before I decide to binge on the other sequels.
Movies: 7 Fast, 7 Furious! I wasn’t even old enough to drive when the first 2 movies came out, but I loved them. Now that the saga is coming to a bittersweet ending, I’m glad the crew got together for one last ride.

This Week’s Comics – March 25th, 2015

This Week’s Comics is the pull list of Comic Books recommended by Hush Comics, with notes and suggestions by co-owner, Sherif Elkhatib.

Recommendations:

Suiciders #2: After I gave the first issue Pick of the Week, you know I had to recommend the second. The dystopian cybernetic Fight Club, or Suiciders for short, asked more questions than it answered, but left enough of an impression that I want to come back for more. This is all besides the fact that Lee Bermejo is an extremely talented creator .

Powers #2: Another Pick of the Week come back for its second installment, and another legendary creator telling the story. Brian Michael Bendis’ Powers has actually been around for 15 years now, but is getting a revisit due to the timing of the live-action Playstation series. I’m a first-time Powers reader, and there is a bunch of prerequisite knowledge, but the humorous writing and intriguing story keep me engaged.

Batman and Robin #40: Whether or not you like that Damian Wayne is back from the dead – with superpowers – you have to admit that this story arc is fascinating. Exhibiting his new-found powers, he was bound to throw in with the grown-ups eventually. Now one of the only two original New52 tag teams left on their book (the other being Snyder/Capullo on Batman) are going to explore the sass of Damian with the heavy hitter Justice League. I like.

The Walking Dead #139: All I needed to see in order to freak out about this was a ship on the front cover. Where the hell did they find a ship? Who the hell is commandeering the ship? It’s all ambiguous, but I would love to see another faction come into play here.

TV:  Arrow is your go-to show of the week. It hasn’t been on the air for a month, and we are all missing Ollie’s sad face and stern lectures.
Music:You might think that AWOLNATION should be your music choice for the week, but you would be mistaken not to get back on board with Modest Mouse Strangers to Ourselves because honestly, it’s been like 10 years for Modest Mouse and they deserve another chance. Also, Inventions Maze of Woods is bound to wind up on your “Sleepytime” mix because I know you have one.

The Geekly Forecast: Mar 2nd – Mar 8th, 2015

The Geekly Forecast is a weekly preview of all the neat stuff coming to screens, stores, and living rooms near you!

Recommendations:
TV:  While The Walking Dead will almost always be a hit for us, American Crime looks like the ground-breaking television that basic cable needs in order to keep up with big guys. Written by John Ridley, American Crime is already being highly-touted.
Music:  While they may be a little hipster, Never Shout Never has an amazing modern pop sound.
Netflix: Everyone needs to laugh, and Aziz Ansari is the man to deliver. Check out Aziz Ansari: Live at Madison Square Garden (2015).
Movies: We are suckers for Science-Fiction, yet Neill Blomkamp’s Chappie looks more like a story about humanity than robots, and we are totally down with that.
DVD: You may not agree with the Oscar nominations (and we don’t either), but Foxcatcher is worth the watch, if for nothing more than for Steve Carrel’s heavy breathing.
