This Week’s Comics – May 20th, 2015

This Week’s Comics is the pull list of Comic Books recommended by Hush Comics, with notes and suggestions by co-owner, Sherif Elkhatib.

Recommendations:

A-Force #1: Ms. Marvel writer G Willow Wilson is writing an all-gal team of super-powered badasses. It’s gonna be like the new X-Men book, but… ya know… good. The team isn’t nearly as star-studded as I would have hoped, consisting of She-Hulk, Runaway‘s Nico, Dazzler and the ancient Inhuman, Medusa. However, that doesn’t mean that there won’t be tons of cameos and good jokes along the way.

Insufferable #1:. This new IDW book by Mark Waid looks pretty funny. Nocturnus’ former sidekick Galahad may be an “arrogant, ungrateful douchebag,” but the two must work together on one final case. Knowing Mark Waid’s writing, the unfolding story will only be half as entertaining as the banter between the two heroes. I see it as kind of a “what if” with Cap/Bucky or Batman/Nightwing, but hopefully it unfolds into something greater. IDW is pretty green when it comes to superhero books, so it’s good that it’s in the legendary hands of Mark Waid.

Two #2’s: Image Comics has put out a considerable amount of new books in the past year. With so much coming at consumers, some are bound to fizz out. The key to longevity is a killer first issue, and two books that certainly accomplished that were Chip Zdarsky’s (Sex CriminalsHoward the DuckKaptara, or gay Saga as he calls it, and Matt Hawkins’ (President of Top Cow Comics) Tithe, the church-robbing activists. Either one is a good choice to read, as are the near-dozen other Image titles out this week (I say go for: ShutterWytches or Trees, too).

This Week’s Comics – May 13th, 2015

This Week’s Comics is the pull list of Comic Books recommended by Hush Comics, with notes and suggestions by co-owner, Sherif Elkhatib.

Recommendations:

Injection #1: I welcome the return of this creative team with open arms. Warren Ellis (writer), Declan Shalvey (pencils) and Jordie Bellaire (colors) worked together on the first arc of Moon Knight and I instantly fell in love with their style. They reunite on this Image Comics title, Injection, a sci-fi thriller about “five crazy people” who “poisoned the 21st Century.” It could be literal, it could be about Lil Wayne. I don’t really know, but I’m going to find out.

Harrow County #1: If horror books are your thing, then you need to give Harrow County a try. This new book from Dark Horse is written by Cullen Bunn, an expert in the field of freaky-scary books like MagnetoDeadpool spinoffs, Sinestro, and Wolf Moon. And if you’re thinking, “but Wolf Moon sucked,” you wouldn’t be wrong. But this is different; this is about goblins and demons and full-blown nightmarish stuff. Bring an extra pair of pantaloons for this one.

Darth Vader #5: Of all the Star Wars books hurled at our faces recently, this is the one Hush recommends you read. Vader is inexplicably the bad guy, but he’s also the protagonist, making for an interesting perspective as you make your way through the book. Because of that perspective, there is a deeper look at who he still is underneath it all, ya know, besides a gross blob of human leftovers.

This Week’s Comics – May 6th, 2015

This Week’s Comics is the pull list of Comic Books recommended by Hush Comics, with notes and suggestions by co-owner, Sherif Elkhatib.

Recommendations:

Swords of Sorrow #1: Another name for this book might be “Badass Women Who Kill Things.” Swords of Sorrow is a team-up book written by Gail Simone (BatgirlSecret Six) and starring Dynamite’s most kick-ass women characters. That means Red Sonja, Vampirella, Kato and more will be joining forces in a pulp adventure book written by Simone and a collective of women writers (Ms. Marvel‘s G. Willow Wilson chief among them). These characters have historically been sex’d up through the years, so it will be great to get women’s perspective.

Guardians Team-Up #5: Normally I wouldn’t recommend these weekly cash-grab books since they tend to be either short, low on quality, or both. This week, however, you can make an exception to pick up this team-up featuring none other than the Pet Avengers. Throg and all his buddies are collaborating with Rocket and crew, ensuring this will be at least a unique read.

Secret Wars #1: If you’ve just about had all the Convergence you can take, then Marvel’s new big event might be just what the Doctor Strange ordered. It really doesn’t alter in purpose all that much from the current DC mega-event; all the universes will essentially merge together, and each one will fight another for freedom/existence. To be honest, I’m kinda scared – only because it’s apparent that DC spent no time on the quality of Convergence. There’s no guarantee that Secret Wars won’t be just as messy, but at this point, the devil that I don’t know can’t be worse than the one I do.

This Week’s Comics – April 29th, 2015

This Week’s Comics is the pull list of Comic Books recommended by Hush Comics, with notes and suggestions by co-owner, Sherif Elkhatib.

Recommendations:

FCBD: That time of year is back! Here’s a link to our 2015 Guide to FCBD.

Order of the Forge #1: Well, this is American History on steroids! Who gives a damn about accuracy? This is about America. Apparently, Native Americans gave George Washington mystic killing powers? And he, along with his good buddies Paul Revere and Ben Franklin, took down an empire? Yeah, that about sums it up. It could be extremely dumb, but Victor Gischler (writer of Angel & Buffy) has some experience with weird, so I will stay hopeful.

DC’s #40s: The last issue of Batman: Endgame is here, the Justice League‘s Darkseid War starts, and John Romita Jr. goes solo on Superman. These three issues alone will give you reprieve from the horrible Convergence cluster-f*** that DC’s pull list has become. Each of these books is great in their own right, with Batman being my absolute favorite. There’s also no reason not to pick up Multiversity. It makes way more sense than Convergence, and is actually given a writer capable of covering something so complex. However, if you need a break from the complexity, look no further than these three books.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #45: Chances are that if you’re a TMNT fan, then you either hated last month’s tragic issue, or you have been pretending it never happened. A few hardcore fans are excited for what the changes might mean, but I am not one of them. Still, with something this crazy going on, I can’t NOT be anxious to read this week’s issue of TMNT.

This Week’s Comics – April 22th, 2015

This Week’s Comics is the pull list of Comic Books recommended by Hush Comics, with notes and suggestions by co-owner, Sherif Elkhatib.

Recommendations:

Uncle Scrooge #1: IDW still has many of the Disney characters’ licenses, meaning that they are likely to be quality books, not shoved down our throats like the Marvel titles have been. The first arc, The Wrath of Gigabeagle, is going to show Scrooge catching up with a whole new generation of rich. This’ll be great, because it’s just the first of more Disney titles to be brought back.

Drones #1: As soon as I saw the cover of this book, I was sold. One of many new IDW books out this week, Drones gives us a deeper look at Predator Drone programs, specifically the Creech Air Force Base in Nevada. Accurate? Probably not. Beautifully drawn and intriguing? You bet your tush. Even if it gets out of control crazy, I’m interested in seeing things from the “God’s Eye View.”

Kaptara #1: Wherever Chip Zdarsky goes, I follow. The Sex Criminals artist and, more recently, Howard the Duck writer is trying his hand at a sci-fi book at Image Comics. It’s been described (by Chip, and nobody else) as a much gayer version of Saga. The crew crash lands on the planet of Kaptara, and from there, things get weird. It looks like one part Galaxy Quest and two parts Ren & Stimpy: Space Madness.

This Week’s Comics is the pull list of Comic Books recommended by Hush Comics, with notes and suggestions by co-owner, Sherif Elkhatib.

Recommendations:

Before I start, this is my response to all the Convergence titles last week:

Converengce: The Question #1
Converengce: The Question #1

Convergence: More character-specific Convergence issues hit the stands this week. Most of the ones last week were a bust but I have hope for this week. Particularly interesting are: the return of Henry Irons and Gen13, an Azrael-Batman face-off, Kingdom Come Batman, and hook-armed Aquaman.

RunLoveKill #1There isn’t a whole lot out there on this new Image Comics title, but all you need to see is one panel and you’ll be hooked. It’s a futuristic tale about a fugitive assassin on the run. I’m sure there’s a real story in there, but all I really want to see is more of that graffiti-like art.

Ms. Marvel #17: It’s been a while since I’ve harped about this book, but it’s time for you to pick up Ms. Marvel, one of the most down-to-earth that is out now – and that’s a big deal since the whole industry is blowing up everything. G Willow Wilson writes a well-balanced book that educates and well as entertains.
