May is almost upon us, and with it comes Free Comic Book Day! Each year, publishers shovel piles of cash to the FCBD program to promote their books, and more importantly, the comic book industry…. FOR FREE. All you have to do to enjoy some free issues is stroll down to your local comic book shop and pick them out (usually five is the limit). Some people collect them as limited edition issues (and then sell them back for an absurd amount). Some people read them to get a jump-start on the “next big thing.” Most, however, use FCBD as it’s designed – an opportunity to learn about stories from publishers that we may not have given a second thought otherwise. No matter what you pick, the day will be a win. Most comic book shops will have grand sales, fun activities or even guest signings. It’s everything you wish Black Friday was, but specifically for the comic book industry. Whether you’re a die-hard DC or Marvel fan, or enjoy the weirder independent titles, there is something for everybody out there this Free Comic Book Day.
