This Weekend in the Nerdverse – August 15th-16th

D23

This weekend at the box office the N.W.A. biopic proved to be a hot commodity, The Man From U.N.C.L.E. made a decent while perhaps surprising showing, and Fantastic Four was almost entirely erased from the hearts and minds of the human race.

  1. Straight Outta Compton with $56.1 million
  2. Mission Impossible – Rogue Nation with $17 million
  3. The Man from U.N.C.L.E. with $13.5 million
  4. Fantastic Four with $8 million
  5. The Gift with $6.5 million

Also, the D23 expo happened over the weekend. You may have heard of it, or you may not have to be honest. It is an expo for Disney super fans and has really taken off now that Disney owns Marvel and Star Wars. While Star Wars was allowed to be at SDCC 2015, many fans noticed an unbelievable lack of a Marvel presence. Disney wanted them to save all of their big announcements and stars for their own convention. And that they did over the weekend.

Benedict Cumberbatch appeared via video at the Doctor Strange panel to talk about what he plans to bring to the role and then he oozed enigmatic charm all over the damn place. God dammit I love that man. The panel also revealed and talked about plans for the film as well as concept art. Comicbook.com

Chris Evans and Anthony Mackie flew all the way from Germany to attend the Captain America: Civil War presentation and panel, where the first ever footage from the highly anticipated film was released. Comicbook.com

Kingdom Hearts will be teaming up with Disney Infinity in the third version of them game where you will have the chance to use none other than The Keyblade during combat. Comicbook.com

The Star Wars presentation is where it was really at for D23. The cast of Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens was there, including Harrison Ford, and the cast of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was announced as well as the news that Colin Trevorrow (Jurassic World) will be directing Star Wars Episode IX. Boom. Comicbook.com

In other news, Donald Trump, that lying sack of racist misogynistic psychotic shit, claimed he was Batman. I get it, if a little boy asks you if you’re Batman you say yes because it’s cute and all but Trump really sullied the name of a good man and hero by keeping that kid’s dreams alive. Twitter

For those of you wondering who will return for Pacific Rim 2 the answer is everyone who didn’t die. Charlie Day will be back (YES!) and will play a bigger role, and so will his German scientist buddy Burn Gorman. Charlie Hunnam will be back of course, and I can only imagine Ron Perlman will pop up too. Source: Slash Films

Bill Murray will indeed make an appearance in Paul Feig’s Ghostbusters reboot, but he will not be playing Peter Venkman. What the what? Source: Birth Movies Death

Jeff Pinkner (The Amazin Spider-Man 2, Lost, Fringe) will reportedly be writing Universal Studios remake of The Creature from the Black Lagoon, and the lead role has been offered to Scarlett Johansson. 23 Jump Street is happening. And this time they’re going to med school. And Chris Miller and Phil Lord will only be producing. Source: Slash Films

It was another quiet weekend at the box office. Mission Impossible held on to the top spot, Fantastic Four was a Fantastic Fail, and The Gift made a descent showing for a film of it’s genre.

  1. Mission Impossible – Rogue Nation           $29.4 million
  2. Fantastic Four                                                  $26.2 million
  3. The Gift                                                               $12 million
  4. Vacation                                                             $9.1 million
  5. Ant-Man                                                             $7.8 million

This Weekend in the Nerd Verse – July 25th-26th, 2015

First thing’s first, it was a quiet and, in some cases, sad weekend at the box office. Nothing too fantastic happened, and none of the new releases managed to grab the number one spot.

  1. Ant-Man                 $24.7 Million
  2. Pixels                     $24 Million
  3. Minions                  $22.1 Million
  4. Trainwreck             $17.3 Million
  5. Southpaw               $16.5 Million

The Deadpool trailer is officially classified, meaning we are one step closer to being able to see it in non Comic Con leaked footage format. However, as the trailer is classified and will likely be attached to Fantastic Four to continue building hype around Marvel’s other Cinematic Universe this means that the soon to be released version will be PG. No word on if the complete red band version from SDCC will ever hit the interwebs. Source: Alberta Film Ratings

This Weekend in the Nerdverse – Ultimate Catch Up Edition

Ever since San Diego Comic Con the Nerdverse has been turned upside down with a near constant overflow of breaking news. If you’ve been having trouble keeping up or if you missed anything our Ultimate News Catch Up Edition is just the thing for you!

The weekend box office numbers offered few surprises. Ant-Man came in at #1 with 58 million, which is none too shabby but certainly didn’t break any records. Minions (those god damn stupid bananas) fell to #2 with 50.2 million, while Trainwreck came in 3rd with 30 million. In 4th place was Inside Out with 11.6 million, and finally Jurassic World came in 5th with 11.4 million.

In what may be my favorite news story ever, Mark Hamill said that he would love to come back and voice the Joker in the newly announced The Killing Joke animated film. Wouldn’t that be the most amazing thing ever, if he and Kevin Conroy both came back to reprise their roles? I would demand a Best Picture Oscar. Twitter

Martin Freeman, that charming bastard, seemed to destroy the rumors that he would be playing Edward Chase in the upcoming Captain America: Civil War. He said he plays a man who works for the American government (i.e. NOT the British Prime Minister) who plays both sides of the line, good and bad, and helps to “tame” superheroes powers. Freeman eluded more to his character actually being Everett Ross, which is who he was rumored to play in the first place. BadTaste. It

The last week we have been privy to more info on Paul Feig’s Ghostbusters reboot than ever before. We’ve seen the uniforms and the Ecto-1, and now we know the characters names. Twitter

Hey, remember the 80’s? And your childhood? Well Hollywood doesn’t give a shit so in a recent interview writer/director Chris Colombus said the Goonies sequel (boo) and the Gremlins remake (BOO) are in heavy development. If it helps he said he’s staying as involved with the projects as he can so the properties don’t get destroyed. Yay? ScreenCrush

Disney is developing yet another live action version of a classic animated movie, only this time it’s The Sword and the Stone. One by one all of their properties are being brought to life in live action on the big screen because they want all of our money. I urge you friends, do not give it to them. Also, with the way things are going when are we going to get a live action Bambi? THR

Hey, remember the 90’s? And your childhood? Well it looks like Xena: Warrior Princess will be leaving your memories and crash landing back on your TV because NBC is rebooting the series. And Lucy Lawless may co-star in it. THR

Sigourney Weaver was apparently pretty depressed about the Alien vs. Predator movies because she was proud of the Alien movies and the former kind of ruined their good reputation. She also thought 2012’s Prometheus caused more problems than it was worth. On a positive note she is really excited about Alien 5, and it being helmed by Neill Blomkamp. RadioTimes

Barry Allen got a new suit for The Flash season 2. It looks exactly like his suit from season 1. Geek Tyrant

Hasbro may decide to reinvigorate M.A.S.K. for a whole new class of youngsters for it’s 30th anniversary. If you don’t know, M.A.S.K., or Mobile Armored Strike Kommand came out in 1985 and was kind of the poor mans G.I. Joe. The best thing M.A.S.K. has ever done is this clip from Robot ChickenYouTube M.A.S.K.! Do they know command isn’t spelled with a K? Hisstank

John Boyega, or Finn from Star Wars VII: The Force Awakens released a freaking awesome photo of Finn and Chewbacca on his Instagram. The team up isn’t surprising, but it’s still damn cool. Instagram

Hellboy III – the little picture that could. Or couldn’t. Guillermo del Toro said over the weekend that he expects the film to cost at least 120 million, so there are not a whole lot of studios trying to get their hands on it. However, Legendary Pictures reportedly told him that if Pacific Rim 2 is a big success they just might be willing to bankroll the final film in the Hellboy trilogy. I’m not sure I like those odds. I loved Pacific Rim, but apparently I was one of few. And even I don’t know why it’s getting a sequel. The Daily Beast

Michael Cera will be voicing Robin in the Lego Batman movie, due out February 10, 2017. Rumor has it he turned down some pretty high profile stuff to do that. THR

Some blurry as hell photos of Jon Bernthal as the Punisher surfaced on Twitter. If you haven’t seen them you haven’t missed anything, it’s literally a blurry photo of him standing there. Twitter

Tilda Swinton confirmed that she will indeed be playing The Ancient One in the upcoming MCU Doctor Strange movie starring Benedict Cumberbatch, and she’s pretty damn excited about it. ScreenCrush

Marvel announced a new Blade comic series and this one will star his daughter. It will be on shelves in October 2015 and is guaranteed to be badass.

Official/unofficial photos have surfaced of Jessica Jones and Luke Cage from the upcoming Netflix series, Jessica Jones. The photos are super high quality, which made everyone believe they were official releases but in fact they are paparazzi photos. CBR

This Weekend in the Nerd Verse… June 20th-21st, 2015

Miles Morales will be swinging at ya this fall after the Secret Wars arc is over. Not only that, but he will be the Spider-Man. No asterisk. He is the real deal. Brian Michael Bendis and Sara Pichelli will work on the book together. Bendis and Pichelli are the co-creators of the bi-racial Puerto Rican and African-American character, who debuted in 2011. Along with the news, Bendis told the story of when his little boy, who is African-American found a Miles Morales mask in the store:

“I started crying in the middle of the aisle,” says Bendis. “I realized my kids are going to grow up in a world that has a multi-racial Spider-Man, and an African American Captain America and a female Thor.”

It looks like Marvel Studios liked the first Thor movie better than the second because they are reportedly looking to get Kenneth Branaugh to return to the franchise. Thor: Ragnarok will play a big part in the development of the MCU and Marvel wants the property to be entrusted to someone they trust and feel will tell the story best. Source: Screen Rant

For those of you asking for it, which I’m assuming is none of you, a new Halloween movie will begin production next month. This one won’t even follow the rebooted storyline done by Rob Zombie a few years ago. This will be the 11th film in the original series. Because why not? Why bother keeping iconic film villains scary? Let’s just turn them all into punchlines and laughing stocks. Source: Geek Tyrant

Malcolm Merlyn, aka the new Ra’s al Ghul, will be returning to Arrow season four. John Barrowman finalized his contact and confirmed his return. Source: Comicbook.com

David Tennant, British actor extraordinaire, will be the voice of Mason Savoy in Chew, the animated series. The role was originally Robin Williams, and after his untimely death, the producers of Chew wanted tot take time before finding a replacement. Tennant is reportedly in studio this week working on his parts. Source: The Hollywood Reporter

And finally, this weekend at the box office dinosaurs still ruled the earth while Pixar fans felt some feelings with a strong opening weekend, and an indie property showed it can hang with the big boys.

  1. Jurassic World      $102 million
  2. Inside Out              $91 million
  3. Spy                         $10.5 million
  4. San Andreas        $8.2 million
  5. Dope                      $6 million

This Weekend in the Nerd Verse… June 13th-14th, 2015

The Game of Thrones season 5 finale aired on Sunday night and left audiences speechless. I won’t reveal anything here, but if you haven’t seen it yet, I will at least say that this episode is a game changer. Now go watch it.

Jurassic World opened over the weekend and was the best movie ever. Don’t believe me? It set the record for the highest global opening ever – the history of movies, making $524.1 million. The previous champion was Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 with $483.2 million. Source: CNN

It also broke the US box office record for highest grossing opening weekend of all time.  Jurassic World made $208.8 million domestically, beating out the previous record holder, The Avengers, which opened at $207.4 million. Source: Deadline

In other Jurassic World news, we should expect to see some sequels because Chris Pratt has already signed on to do them. Source: EW

Sony Pictures is releasing a third The Smurfs movie, and this one will be all animation and no live-action (sorry NPH) and is called Get Smurphy. Over the weekend the film title and three new cast members were announced, Demi Lovato as Smurfette, Rainn Wilson as Gargamel, and Mandy Patinkin as Papa Smurf. I can’t wait to not see this movie. Source: ScreenRant

Brad Pitt may have changed the game for modern movie studios when it was announced that he will star in a Netflix exclusive movie called War Machine. Source: Geek Tyrant

A new Doom trailer as well as game play footage premiered at E3 over the weekend. You can expect that game to hit shelves in Spring 2016. Source: ComicBook.com

Another big announcement out of E3 this weekend is that there will be a Dishonored 2. They premiered the trailer and you can expect this game out in Spring 2016 as well. Source: ComicBook.com

As we all know, Fear the Walking Dead is a prequel to The Walking Dead and takes place during the zombie outbreak. However, it was revealed over the weekend that the plan for the series is for it to eventually catch up to TWD’s timeline. And then they can do crossover episodes! Oh god I hope not… Source: EW

And finally, this weekend at the box office Jurassic World dominated, and no other new releases even graced the top five:

1. Jurassic World $208.8 million
2. Spy $16 million
3. San Andreas $11 million
4. Insidious: Chapter 3 $7.3 million
5. Pitch Perfect 2 $6 million

This Weekend in the Nerd Verse… June 6th-7th, 2015

The Tony Awards happened. So there’s that.

There was a Gilmore Girls reunion and Jared Padalecki was there, so that’s a thing.

There is officially no getting around the cold, hard truth: Constantine is totally and completely undeniably canceled. And it will not be picked up by SyFy, Netflix, Hulu, or Yahoo! Screen. The writing was rough at times, and recasting Zed so early on was a strange choice, but I thought Matt Ryan was an excellent John Constantine. The show had a strong, but small fan base and while the Twitter trends were exciting and Stephen Amell and Mark Sheppard’s efforts to save the show gave fans hope for a future, Executive Producer Daniel Cerone confirmed over the weekend that audiences must bid Constantine a fond farewell forever. But don’t worry guys, Gotham is coming back for season two…/cringe. Source: Comic Book Movie

Joseph Gordon-Levitt opened up about Sandman over the weekend, acknowledging why pre-production is taking so long and his vision for the film. Levitt says it will be “a grand spectacular action film, but that relies on none of those old ordinary cliches.” As in no punching, no blowing shit up. When Sandman finally hits theaters it will hopefully be like no other comic book movie ever before, since it is such a beautiful and unique property. I suppose if anyone can do it, Joseph Gordon-Levitt can. Source: MTV

BART SIMPSON IS GOING TO DIE! There, now that I’ve sensationalized the story I can tell the truth. Al Jean revealed at ATX over the weekend that after 25 years of blood lust Sideshow Bob will finally kill Bart Simpson. However, it will happen in a segment in the Treehouse of Horror episode, meaning Bart Simpson is in fact not going to die and will be around for the rest of the series. The Treehouse of Horror episodes have always been my favorite so I’m pretty damn excited to see how Sideshow Bob finally gets the drop on Bart. Source: EW

Rumors about a reboot of The Stand have been circulating for a long while now. Josh Boone is attached to direct the property and is determined to make it a top priority, and now he seems to have found an all-new way to properly address the source material. He is in talks with Showtime to direct and eight episode miniseries that will lead straight into a big budget feature film release for the conclusion. Nothing is final yet, and this is a risky move, but if it works out it may be the best way to do justice to one of Stephen King’s greatest works ever. Source: The Wrap

Jason Statham is (or isn’t) in talks to play Bullseye in Daredevil season two. Either that or he was (or wasn’t) but if there ever were talks between him and Marvel they have allegedly fallen apart because of the leak that Statham was in talks to with Marvel. See? That made no sense. Rumors are a little nuts with this one right now. Statham may or may not be in talks with Marvel to play Bullseye, but those supposed talks may or may not have fallen apart because a leak hit the Internet that they were happening. Source: Screen Rant

Apparently this was the weekend of the trailer/teaser/TV spot because we were privileged with releases from The Martian, Ant Man, Fantastic Four, and Jurassic World.

The Martian gave us our first glimpse of the film and Matt Damon introducing his team:

Ant-Man shed some light on to how this unlikely superhero will fit in with all the other big guys in the MCU:

Fantastic Four gave us the Human Torch all ablaze and stuff:

And Jurassic World gave us our final trailer before the film’s release on Friday, June 12. This one is darker and scarier, but I don’t think they can build anticipation any higher at this point:

https://youtu.be/qoCl9KcItWY

And finally, here is the weekend box office round up. It turns out that good comedy can be action, horror movies never come in first, and I guess the ride was over for bromantics:

  1. Spy                                      $30 million
  2. San Andreas                     $26.4 million
  3. Insidious: Chapter 3        $23 million
  4. Entourage                         $10.4 million
  5. Mad Max: Fury Road      $7.9 million

This Weekend in the Nerd Verse… May 29th-31st, 2015

Mark Millar took a lot of time out of his day to talk about movies over the weekend. After Kick-Ass 2 was such a flop it seemed Millar was not the hot commodity we thought he was, but since redeeming himself with Kingsmen: The Secret Service it looks like at least two more Millar properties will be headed to a theater near you sooner than you think. Not only does he have an insane idea for a Hit-Girl movie (which I’m really okay with not happening) but according to Millar, Starlight already has a script written for Twentieth Century Fox and Chrononauts is in production with Universal and has already found one of its two male leads. Source: Jo Blo

Editor’s Note: “We love you Mark Millar! Kick-Ass 2 was better than the first one, and we want a Hit-Girl movie yesterday!” – Adrian and Sherif

In other news, a group of six young lads flew down to Atlanta, GA where Captain America: Civil War is filming to screen test for the role of yet-another-rebooted-Peter-Parker-Spider-Man. Asa Butterfield, who was rumored to have been cast last week, was there as well as five other youngsters no one has really heard of. At this point they could announce that they cast Bill Murray as Spider-Man and I still don’t think I would care. Well, I don’t know, Bill Murray is so damn amazing… Source: THR

There is already talk about Jurassic Park 5, or would that be Jurassic World 2? Either way, Colin Trevorrow won’t be directing it. He’d like to stay involved in the franchise, but believes that having different directors for each film can add a dynamic feel to the series. Source: Coming Soon

Despite David Ayers’ best efforts, spoilers and photos continue to leak from his highly secured Suicide Squad set in Toronto. The latest of which was a bunch of photos of Margot Robbie (as Harley Quinn) on a motorcycle. While the internet is buzzing about the photos I fail to see how it’s really news. Yeah, she rides a motorcycle; that is a thing that happens? Can’t we just leave Ayers film in peace so maybe we can have a few surprises left when the film hits theaters? We can’t? Okay, my mistake. Spoiler on. Source: Daily Mail

Good news everyone! Lumberjanes is in development with Twentieth Century Fox to become a major motion picture. It even already has a writer attached, Will Widger. This Weekend in the Nerd Verse… May 23rd-25th, 2015

I hope everyone had a wonderful Memorial Day weekend! Denver Comic Con happened over the weekend and in case you missed it, it was a blast! Check out our coverage of DCC here, and stay tuned for more articles to come. In other news…

Batman’s appearance in the Suicide Squad movie was confirmed over the weekend after so many rumors and a whole crap ton of speculation. Ben Affleck has remained quiet on the issue, despite being spotted in Toronto where the movie is filming, but a photo of his Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice Batmobile was photographed on set and shared via Instagram.

Cary Fukunaga has very unfortunately dropped out of the It remake. Apparently he was afraid of his artistic vision for the film becoming compromised with New Line Cinema’s desire to cut the film’s budget. New Line Cinema pushed for a cheaper project after the Poltergeist remake opened to poor ratings and very little money. I can’t blame a director for dropping out when his production company seems to already be predicting his failure. It is a very special and frightening part of my childhood, and sadly it seems like it’s in bad hands at the moment. Source: The Wrap

American Horror Story: Hotel is really putting together an amazing cast, especially with their newest addition, Max Greenfield (Schmidt, or Schmitty from New Girl). Greenfield, who is freaking awesome, will be joining series newcomers Matt Bomer, Cheyenne Jackson, and Lady Gaga as well as series veterans Evan Peters, Sarah Paulson, Wes Bentley, Angela Bassett, Chloe Sevigny, and Kathy Bates. I’m officially counting down the days until the premiere.

Empire released some first look photos of Ridley Scott’s upcoming science fiction film, The Martian. The movie is based on Andy Weir’s book, and stars Matt Damon, Jessica Chastain, Michael Pena, Kristen Wiig, and Jeff Daniels. It tells the story of an astronaut who wakes up alone on Mars, after being left behind by his team while they were on a mission. Source: ComicBook.com

Tyler James Williams (who should have been cast as Spider-Man in the reboot, which should have been about Miles Morales) became an unlikely source of breaking news over the weekend. During an interview with Flicks and the City he revealed that Jaden Smith will be playing Static Shock in the upcoming live action digital series about the character.

It was a disappointing holiday weekend at the box office. The over-hyped Tomorrowland made a meager showing but managed to finish first. The top five money makers in theaters this weekend were:

  1. Tomorrowland $32.9 million                      49% rating on RottenTomatoes.com
  2. Pitch Perfect 2 $30.8 million                      67% rating on RottenTomatoes.com
  3. Mad Max: Fury Road $24.8 million            98% rating on RottenTomatoes.com
  4. Poltergeist $22.6 million                             33% rating on RottenTomatoes.com
  5. Avengers: Age of Ultron $21.6 million        75% rating on RottenTomatoes.com
