This Week’s Comics – June 24th, 2015

This Week’s Comics is the pull list of Comic Books recommended by Hush Comics, with notes and suggestions by co-owner, Sherif Elkhatib.

Recommendations:

We Are Robin #1: Robin has become a symbol in the city of Gotham now that Batman is gone – well, our Batman. The youth of Gotham City have risen to the occasion and are protecting the streets on their own volition. It’s part Peter Pan and the Lost Kids with a dash of the Occupy movement, and a few parts Gotham Imposters. It could fall really flat, but there’s a chance that it could reach a whole new generation of teenage activists that comics just have not had lately.

E is for Extinction #1: Forgive me if I’m misreading this, but it seems like the idea of homo superior being “cool” and “marketable” is just too close to the real world – analogous to black culture and hip-hop trends. The X-Men franchise has always been great about generalizing Civil Rights movements, but the idea of making it “hip” to be a mutant is so unique. I’m sure putting it on a pedestal with the original Grant Morrison work will be a bad idea, so I’m just going to enjoy this new body of work as a separate entity – the fact that Morrison’s artist on Nameless, Chris Burnham, will be writing the story shows me that Marvel is taking a unique direction with it.

X-Men ’92 #1: Another great time in the golden age of the X-Men, this digital-first series is based on the X-Men: Animated Series. After reading the first couple chapters, I’m excited for this to come out in print format. It’s flooding with nostalgia; Scott and Logan are two powder-kegs of testosterone, Rogue and Gambit’s relationship is as complicated as can be, and Professor X is still keeping secrets. The story-telling isn’t revolutionary, but it’s pretty much everything you expected given the source material, and it’s incredibly true to its source material.
